The remarkable style of the buildings designed by Antoni Gaudí i Cornet at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 29th century surpassed the national level of architecture in Spain. They include Parc Güell, Casa Vicens, Palau Güell, Casa Milá en Casa Batlló. Josep Batlló, a rich fabric manufacturer had originally wanted to demolish his house and asked Gaudí to make a new design. Gaudí thought it sad to demolish the building and he designed a truly fantastic house around it. He threw overboard all standard architectural principles. No right angles or straight lines. But flowing forms from a distant dream world. Words can hardly describe it ... Gaudí at his best. From the east the Sagrada Família appears completed but that is just its appearance. Gaudí was already involved in the building of the cathedral while working on Casa Milá. His predecessor Villar turned up his heels and Gaudí took over the work. He could not change the crypt anymore but he did redesign the rest of the cathedral. He never made elaborate floor plans, Gaudí solved the construction problems on the spot during building. The result is elegant and cheerful, the building constructions are always functional and 100% reliable. Today a group of 12 architects and dozens of construction workers work on the building daily, the cathedral will be completed around 2025 if the financing holds. Santiago de Compostela is a renowned place of pilgrimage in northwest Spain, where an ancient legend claims the apostle James is buried. The pilgrims' trail is one of the oldest European traditions and has followed more or less the same route from time immemorial. The county of Wiltshire contains the most famous stone circles in the world: Stonehenge & Avebury. The meaning of the circles remains a mystery to this day but, together with their surroundings, they form an important testament to pre-history. Stonehenge, at the centre of Salisbury Plain, is a great place for people who love prehistory. Remnants of old burial mounds and ancient roads can be found here. Stonehenge is one of the most mysterious structures in England. The remains display a long history. It was recently discovered that people had lived here from 5000 BC. The latest research has revealed that Stonehenge was built in four different stages from around 3000 BC. Stonehenge consists of a number of stone circles, which are surrounded by a ditch and a bank. The solitary Heel stone stands outside the ditch and bank. The first circle inside the bank consisted of 56 holes, the Aubrey holes, named after their discoverer John Aubrey. The next circle consisted of a ring of vertical stones, so-called sarsen stone. Inside stood a ring of 60 bluestones and at the centre stands a stone circle in the shape of a horseshoe. Many stones such as the slaughter and altar stone have fallen down, but maybe they will be restored to their former glory one day. The Wouda Steam Pumping Station near Lemmer in Friesland went into operation in 1920 and is the biggest steam pumping station ever built in the Netherlands. Under extreme weather conditions, when there is heavy rain and a hard north-easterly wind, the Wouda pumping station is started up again. The Wouda steam pumping station has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1998. The construction of the Wouda pumping station had everything to do with regulating water levels. As a coastal province, Friesland had suffered much flooding over the centuries. In 1902 the Dutch government appointed an advisory committee, which had to utter wise words on flood prevention. 'Build dikes and a pumping station', was the retort. For the realisation of the plans an important role was given to the then head engineer of the provincial water board - Dirk Frederik Wouda. Wouda chose steam power, which was a lot cheaper then the diesel engines in the original plan. He even considered powering the pumps electrically, but this too remained in the drawer due to its high costs. There was also a good technical reason to choose steam, the pumps had to be able to operate at different speeds and steam offered the best way to do this.
